Blue
Cruise Scuba
Diving in Aegean and Mediterranean Turkey
Scuba diving
is an adventure with Captain Aksona Mehmet, who has been a sponge diver in
the blue waters of Aegean and Mediterranean for many
years and is a CMAS qualified diving
instructor. You can add scuba diving
to your Blue Voyage itinerary, or you
can create an itinerary which features the best diving spots along
the Turkish Aegean and Mediterranean coastline.

A
Blue Cruise combined with scuba diving often begins in Bodrum (Halicarnassus) and
ranges between the environs
of Oraklar-Çökertme and Akbük-Karacasöğüt environs,
Tuzla-Yediadalar, Bördübek Bükü, Büyüyen Taşlar, Kocadağ-Mersincik,
chosen according to the past performance of our guests.
A
History of Sponge Diving in Bodrum
Long
famous for its sponge diving industry, Bodrum was home to sponge
divers for many decades before tourism began to flourish.
Sponge divers sailed as far as the shores of Africa for prime diving
spots, and often stayed at sea for many months. Some returned
crippled from the "bends", whereby ascent from the sea floor caused
nitrogen bubbles in the blood, resulting in paralysis. These
sponges were exported all over the world and were a very important
source of income for families along the Aegean. In fact, there
are still a handful of retired sponge divers today, sitting in the
local cafes, reminiscing about the good old days of the early 20th
century. Captain Aksona Mehmet loves to share stories of the
old days, as well as inform his guests of sponge diving techniques,
the best spots, and the process of curing the sponges for final sale.
